Moving to Europe is a dream come true for many. Portugal, in particular, is a top choice for many couples and families due to its diverse culture, stunning location, and gorgeous architecture. However, moving abroad is a major life decision and requires thorough research and consideration. If you’re ready to make Portugal your new home, here are some things you should know:

1. Affordable Living Costs

One of the biggest benefits of moving to Portugal is the remarkable cost of living. From food and drinks to rent, everything is available at a reasonable price. In fact, Portugal is one of the most affordable countries in Western Europe. In Lisbon, the country’s capital, the rent is a quarter of the amount you’ll pay in New York or London. You’ll definitely be able to live a comfortable life here!

2. Minimal Residency Requirements

Unlike many other countries in the EU, Portugal is known for its minimal residency requirement for its citizens. Once you gain citizenship, you don’t have to maintain your residency or necessarily stay in the country. You have the freedom to reside in an EU country while holding your citizenship.

3. Plenty of Sunny Days in Portugal

Portugal is famous for its sunshine, with temperatures at 18°C across the year and reaching up to 40°C in the summer season. While this pleasant warmness might be welcoming, you should be prepared for the winter cold. The temperature drops during December and January, and there’s plenty of rainfall. Make sure you have the right clothing and accessories for the weather.

4.  Great healthcare options

Since socialism is popular, you can expect Portugal to have a socialized healthcare system. The Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS) is available to all citizens at heavily subsidized rates and is free of cost for those under 18 and over 65. Non-citizens are also offered subsidized rates.

5. New Citizenship Laws for Sephardic Jews

Decree-Law No. 30-A/2015 states that Sephardic Jews of Portuguese descent can acquire Portuguese nationality via naturalization. To be applicable for this, you need to have a Sephardic surname and demonstrate your link to the Portuguese Sephardic community. This law applies to ancestors from countries in North Africa, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and places where the Sephardim emigrated after being expelled from Spain and Portugal.
